German crane rental company BTB lifted a new gold-plated cupola cross on to the Berlin Dome in August.
Due to corrosion damage, the old cupola cross was taken down in December 2006. The damage proved to be irreparable and thus a new one was built by a Bavaria, Germany fabricator. The new 15m-high, 12.5t structure was plated with 1.5 kg of gold foil by specialists from Berlin.
The new cross had to be lifted to a hook height of 100m at a radius of 65m. For this task the crane had to be erected with 50m of telescopic boom, 77m luffing fly-jib, Y-suspension backmast and 135t of counterweight.
